About Willie:
Hello, my name is Willie, an MSc student in the Interdisciplinary Oncology program. I began research as an undergraduate with little experience and have since worked across four research institutes on projects spanning neurodegenerative disease, clinical mass spectrometry, and cancer research. My experiences include studying cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers at St. Paul’s Hospital, developing clinical mass spectrometry assays at Vancouver General Hospital, and applying machine learning to predict prostate cancer aggressiveness at the BC Cancer Research Institute. These experiences taught me more than technical research skills. I learned how to find opportunities through targeted outreach, balance research with coursework and other commitments, and prepare for graduate school. As a Research Coach, I hope to share the practical lessons I’ve learned along the way and help students navigate the transition from coursework to research with greater confidence and a clearer sense of direction!
