How does it work?
Once applicants submit their applications, the Student Engagement Committee (SEC) will screen through the entire pool and select applicants that’ve demonstrated the most enthusiasm and commitment in research. Based on the indicated research interest, SEC will pair the shortlisted applicants with faculty members in similar fields.
Further progression beyond the event, such as joining the lab in the form of Work Learns, grants, or volunteering, are at the discretion of the PI and the student.
Applicants need to have the following requirement in order to participate in this event:
- Must possess URO membership
- A current UBC Undergraduate student
- Complete and submit the application prior to the indicated deadline —- this includes submitting a resume
- Excited and open to exploring various research fields!

If your lab is looking for enthusiastic undergraduates to help out in the summer or at any capacity, please sign up to participate in this event!
We will do the screening for you! Upon shortlisting, we will pair you with multiple interested students who share similar research interests. Over a 2-hour period, you will have the opportunity to engage in brief one-on-one conversations with each of them. You are free to proceed with any next steps involving the students you’ve interviewed, provided that any decisions are made mutually.

Am I guaranteed to secure a spot in RIF if I submit an application?
Unfortunately no. We receive more applications than the available interview spots every year.
Do I need prior research experience to be selected for this event?
Nope. While it would certainly help your application if you have research experience, it is not a requirement. Showcasing your enthusiasm in your application is equally, if not more important.
Is a research position guaranteed if I am shortlisted for RIF?
Any steps beyond the event will depend on your discussion with the faculty member. Unfortunately, URO cannot guarantee you an offer on behalf of the labs.
What are some tips to be selected for the event?

My research lab prefer applicants with specific laboratory skills, how can SEC assist with that?
There will be a spot in the sign-up form to list down the skills you wish your candidates have. We will take these preferences into consideration while screening. However, matches are not guaranteed. We kindly ask that you also keep an open mind when meeting with candidates
